Your Mom Was Right ~ Breakfast is Important

Your Mom Was Right ~ Breakfast is Important!

Remember your mom telling you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? How she always insisted that you finish every bite before you went off to school for the day? As a kid, this may have bugged you. However, it seems there is a lot of truth to this. We are a bit biased, cuz we just love breakfast. But, here is some real evidence why breakfast is important.

Breakfast Influences Your Whole Day

Eating a healthy breakfast will impact just about every other dimension of your day. It affects how you perform both mentally and physically. After a whole night of fasting during sleep, breakfast instantly raises your body’s energy level and restores your blood glucose levels to normal. It will also increase your glycogen stores, encouraging your body to function efficiently.

Breakfast Reduces Stress

When you eat breakfast it immediately lowers your cortisol levels. What does that mean? Cortisol is a stress hormone and is released from your adrenal glands. It causes the breakdown of muscle protein and fat. Upon first waking, our cortisol levels are at the highest point. Nutrition first thing in the morning will lower these levels. Skipping breakfast causes these levels to remain elevated. Chronically high cortisol levels increase your risk of obesity and metabolic syndromes, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Breakfast Helps With Weight Loss

Another reason why breakfast is important is that it is the most satiating meal of the day. It can impact your food consumption for the rest of the day. Researchers have found that eating a healthy and hearty breakfast helps reduce overall caloric intake. Their findings also show a strong correlation between long-term weight maintenance and regular breakfast consumption. It also regulates blood sugar. Because you feel full and satisfied, you are less inclined to binge on unhealthy choices.

Breakfast Helps You to Focus

Consuming breakfast can make you smarter. Really. It is true. And, here’s how. Breakfast affects your cognitive function throughout the day. Meaning, it helps you to focus, think clearly and improves memory. After fasting all night while sleeping your blood glucose levels are low and can affect your ability to concentrate. Studies show that kids who eat breakfast perform better in school, and have more physical energy that those who don’t.
